In addition to being a professor, I am a full-time single father of a teenage girl. Raising her is my biggest and best job, but I manage to have some fun as well. Namely...

Cycling

Among other things I am an active cyclist. I returned to competition in July 2011 after 15 years away from it and have really enjoyed it.

During my cycling salad days back in the early 1990s I turned from road racing, where I won two state championships and raced in college for the Claremont Colleges team, to mountain bike and then cyclocross racing. I was a factory team racer for Klein, Ellsworth, and finally Trek-Volkswagen between 1992 and 1997 and on the road for Saturn and Ellsworth. I currently am owner and head coach at LegSmith Coaching, title sponsor of LegSmith Racing.

Cooking

Cooking is an almost perfect compliment to cycling: the latter forces me to power a two-wheeled vehicle that runs on fat, and the former enables me to refill the tank after I've run the bike on fat for a while.

I cook at home and much enjoy cooking for family and friends. With the luxury of time I'll happily spend all day in the kitchen but, being a single father, have come to have a weekday school night rotation of quick healthy meal options. You can find some of them and other recipes at singledadninja.com
